LOST PRODUCT OF SOCIETY: Fashion met zeggingskracht van Heden Startprijswinnaar Peter Wertmann

Op vrijdag 13 september opende Heden/Today het nieuwe kunstseizoen met ‘Lost Product of Society’, een unieke solotentoonstelling van Peter Wertmann, waarin de spotlights zijn gericht op fashion met een fascinerende zeggingskracht. Wertmann studeerde met de bij Heden geëxposeerde collectie af aan de afdeling Textiel en Mode van de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) in Den Haag en won daarmee de Heden Startprijs 2024.

Het in deze collectie uitgewerkte thema -de spanning tussen vrijheid en restrictie in een veranderende wereld- heeft deels een biografische oorsprong: Wertmann ervoer de rigide restricties die hem tijdens militaire dienst werden opgelegd als een schril contrast met de vanzelfsprekende vrijheid van zijn jeugdjaren te midden van de Zwitserse Alpen. Deze spanning maakt Wertmann voelbaar door ogenschijnlijk tegengestelde elementen in zijn eigenzinnige fashion samen te brengen. Vrijheid en van bovenaf opgelegde regels mogen dan via verschillende paden bewegen, ze bestaan toch echt bij de gratie van elkaar, is de gedachte daarachter.
Wertmanns selectie van materiaal, vorm en kleur getuigt van een doorleefd sociaal-cultureel referentiekader. ‘De combinatie van technische verfijning, inhoudelijke diepgang en een zeer eigen beeldend vermogen maakt dat ‘Lost Product of Society’ je grijpt om niet meer los te laten’, aldus de Hedenjury.

Research
Wertmanns creaties zijn het driedimensionale resultaat van een complex proces, waarvoor onderzoek en co-creatie belangrijke pijlers zijn. In de onderzoeksfase speurt hij naar deelonderwerpen die (in-)direct iets zeggen over de hoofdthematiek van de collectie. Zo keek hij voor ‘Lost Product of Society’ naar de traditionele uitdossing van de in extreme koude levende Inuit en naar de kleding die vanaf eind 19de eeuw werd gedragen tijdens poolexpedities. Ook put Wertmann voor zijn werk uit de domeinen defensie en beeldende kunst. Hij neemt de materiaalkennis en vormentaal die al deze inspiratiebronnen bevatten tot zich en geeft daaraan een eigentijdse draai. Daarbij gebruikt hij graag materialen die langdurig gebruik kunnen doorstaan, zoals zware denims, suède gecoat met aluminium, latex en nylon. De specifieke eigenschappen van de materialen staan in directe relatie tot Wertmanns ontwerpkeuze, zodat vorm, kennis en materiaal intrinsiek met elkaar zijn verbonden.

Co-creatie
Karakteristiek voor Wertmanns werkwijze is co-creatie. Hij heeft maar liefst 15 makers betrokken bij ‘Lost Product of Society’: ambachtslieden, filmstudenten, een filmregisseur, een fotograaf en modellen. De foto’s van Jelle Koiter, die in deze tentoonstelling een hoofdrol spelen, worden gekenmerkt door technische perfectie, innovatieve ruimtesuggesties en een onheilspellende sfeer die de zeggenschap van de modellen en kledingstukken verder versterkt. Filmregisseur Luuk Sieben maakte de video die in deze tentoonstelling te zien is. De beelden, die Sieben opnam in een centrum voor asfaltproductie, verlenen extra dimensie aan de kledingstukken. Daarmee wordt eens te meer de grote kracht van samenwerking in het creatieve maakproces van Wertmann aangetoond.

Peter Wertmann (Rolle, Zwitserland, 1996) studeerde in juni 2024 af aan de afdeling Textiel en Mode van de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (KABK) in Den Haag. Voor zijn eindexamenwerk ‘Lost Product of Society’ kende Stichting Heden hem in juli 2024 de Heden Startprijs toe, een jaarlijkse prijs waarmee Heden jonge talentvolle kunstenaars ondersteunt. Met dezelfde afstudeercollectie is hij geselecteerd voor deelname aan Lichting 2024, een wedstrijd voor in Nederland afgestudeerde modestudenten die op 6 september wordt gehouden als onderdeel van de Amsterdam Fashion Week. Bovendien is Wertmann finalist van Designblok, een internationaal designfestival in Praag voor designalumni uit heel Europa, en zal hij in oktober meedingen naar prijzen in de categorie Fashion. Medio 2023 liep Wertmann stage bij modehuis Melitta Baumeister in New York.

On 13-09-2024 Heden/Today opened the new art season with ‘Lost Product of Society’, a unique solo exhibition by Peter Wertmann, spotlighting fashion of a fascinating expressiveness. Wertmann graduated from the Textile and Fashion department of the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague with the collection exhibited at Heden, for which he won the Heden Start Award 2024.

The theme elaborated in this collection -the tension between freedom and restrictions in a changing world- has partly biographical origins: Wertmann experienced the rigid restrictions imposed during military service as a stark contrast to the self-evident freedom of his youth amidst the Swiss Alps. Wertmann makes this tension palpable by bringing together seemingly opposite elements in his idiosyncratic fashion. Freedom and rules imposed from above may move along different paths, but they really do exist by the grace of each other, is the thought behind it.
Wertmann's selection of material, form and colour testifies to a sophisticated socio-cultural frame of reference. ‘The combination of technical refinement, depth of content and a highly individual visual ability makes ‘Lost Product of Society’ grabs you and won’t let go,’ the Heden jury stated.

Research
Wertmann's creations are the three-dimensional result of a complex process, for which research and co-creation are key pillars.
In the research phase, he searches for subtopics that say (in-)directly something about the main theme of the collection. For ‘Lost Product of Society’, for instance, he looked at the traditional attire of the Inuit living in extreme cold and the clothing worn during polar expeditions from the late 19th century onwards. For his work, Wertmann also draws on the military domain and visual art.
He takes the knowledge of materials and form language contained in all these sources of inspiration and gives them a contemporary twist. In doing so, he likes to use materials that can withstand long-term use, such as heavy denims, suede coated with aluminium, latex, and nylon. The specific properties of the materials are related to Wertmann's design choice, so that form, knowledge, and material are intrinsically linked.

Co-creation
Characteristic of Wertmann's working method is co-creation. He involved 15 makers in ‘Lost Product of Society’: craftsmen, film students, a film director, a photographer and models.
Jelle Koiter's photographs, which play a leading role in this exhibition, are characterised by technical perfection, innovative space suggestions and an ominous atmosphere that further enhances the expressiveness of the models and garments. Film director Luuk Sieben made the video featured in this exhibition. The footage, which Sieben shot in an asphalt production centre, lends extra dimension to the garments. This once again demonstrates the great power of collaboration in Wertmann's creative making process.

‘Lost Product of Society’ can be seen until Saturday 2 November 2024.

Peter Wertmann (Rolle, Switzerland, 1996) graduated in June 2024 from the Department of Textiles and Fashion of the KABK. For his graduation work ‘Lost Product of Society’, Stichting Heden awarded him the Heden Start Award in July 2024, an annual prize through which Heden supports young talented artists. With the same graduation collection, Wertmann was selected to participate in Lichting 2024, a competition for fashion students graduating in the Netherlands held on 6 September as part of Amsterdam Fashion Week. Moreover, Wertmann is a finalist of Designblok, an international design festival in Prague for design alumni from all over Europe and will compete for prizes in the Fashion category in October. In mid-2023, Wertmann completed an internship at fashion house Melitta Baumeister in New York.
